European Investment Bank grants $25 million to support Cape Verde access to EllaLink submarine cable

The European Investment Bank has recently approved a $25 million loan for Cape Verde Telecom CVT to support the connection of Cape Verde and EllaLink transatlantic submarine cables, as well as 4G mobile network expansion and fiber-to-the-home (FTTH) deployment.

Cape Luis Livramento de Brito, chairman of Cape Verde Telecom, stated, “This project will improve the links between our islands and the rest of the world and improve communication across the country.”

Jose Luis Livramento de Brito added: “Connecting to the EllaLink cable and getting an EIB loan is key to future construction. The connection between Cape Verde and EllaLink will enhance the flexibility of the island’s international communications.

Cape Verde Telecom connected Cape Verde to its first international submarine cable system, the Atlantis-2, in 2000. The company is also a partner of the West African Submarine Cable WACS, which was commissioned in 2012.

It is expected that Atlantis-2 will be retired shortly after the launch of the EllaLink submarine cable system.
