Czech grid operator and Germany cooperate to regulate cross-border current

Recently, Bloomberg quoted the Czech power grid operator CEPS announcement, CEPS agreed to participate in its German partner 50Hertz transmission company to install phase shift transformers along the border to regulate excess current, thus protecting the Czech grid from overload. These phase shifting transformers are expected to be installed in 2016.

The Czech grid is frequently overloaded due to unplanned currents caused by excess electricity produced by renewable energy in Germany. Currently, Germany relies on Polish and Czech power grids to deliver record power from northern wind farms to industrial users in the south. The Czech Republic and Poland have issued a warning that the grid will be completely disconnected from Germany during the most windy time. The installation of phase-shifting transformers will increase the safety and fluency of electricity trade between the Czech Republic and Germany.

In November 2013, CEPS stated that it plans to invest 2.6 billion euros (about RMB 21.37 billion) in the construction of the Czech power grid in the next 10 years.
